Summer Safety

Its Summer time. Remember to be safe. Keep cool by drinking plenty of water, especially trying to drink at least 8 ounces prior to going outside in the sun for long periods of time, and periodically drinking during your play time in the sun. Don't forget sunscreen, and limiting sun exposure.

Biking, Skateboarding, Street Games are all fun but be sure to have adult supervision to watch for traffic. Remember to wear the appropriate Protective equipment such as Helmets, Knee Pads, and Elbow pads. In New York State Helmets for Bicycling Children and early young adults is the law.

Swimming keeps us cool, but always remember even the expert swimmers became that way because they lived through it. Bring a buddy. Always use the buddy system when swimming regardless of your skill level. Try to swim in pools and areas where there is a certified Life Guard on duty. Do Not drink alcohol or use medications or drugs that reduce your ability to react, and think. Obey all posted signs especially in open water and moving bodies of water such as rivers or creeks. Current patterns can easily sweep you away and drag you under. Abide by Pool warning and Danger signs for diving. A 5 foot individual diving into a 4 foot pool spells utter disaster.

Most of all be smart. Trust your instinct. If it seems dangerous then don't do it. If there is any sign of injury call 911 or your local emergency number immediately and be prepared to answer the emergency Dispatcher's questions as accurately as you can.
